Russian-born painter Nina Mikhailenko grew up among the intelligentsia and cultural elite of St. Petersburg, where she studied piano, ballet and fine art. She graduated from the renowned Mukhina Art Institute and came to the United States in 1974.

A member of Oil Painters of America, she also works in watercolors, pastels, charcoal and ink, often on location. As a plein-air artist, she has traveled the world to capture the atmosphere of her subjects, and in turn her award-winning paintings have been shown all over the United States and Europe.

Stylistically, her work has roots in a late-19th century Russian art movement called “Peredvishniki.” Literally, the Peredvishniki were itinerants or wanderers, who rebelled against the formal restrictions of the tsarist Imperial Academy of Arts and opted to show their work in new venues. They painted populist themes in an accessible style: peasants, religious celebrations, and Russian landscapes.

Nina Mikhailenko upholds this tradition of creating art that is both serious and accessible. Not surprisingly, her most successful works are commissions, which allow her to match a theme with its environment. Her murals of life on Pampas, bullfights, chefs, cigar smokers, jazz musicians, and well-fed people having fun adorn the walls of upscale steakhouses, for example, and carry no hidden moral agenda.

Her human figures, particularly, embody a depth of character and memory, in close and crowded settings energized by vigorous color, texture and motion. Nina herself is a small, delicate woman, yet some of her canvasses are enormous. They seem to reflect a heroic impulse: energetic, bright, always stretched to the limit of a realistic style.

Nina masters great quantities of energy, creating art that is densely composed, painstakingly wrought, bold and detailed.

In sum, she is an exceptional artist whose work is vibrant yet comforting, monumental yet in perfect scale with its surroundings.

symphony

The Seattle Symphony was founded in 1903, and is one of the oldest and largest cultural institutions in the Pacific Northwest. Recognized for its adventurous programming and tradition of performing music by contemporary composers, the Symphony is represented on nearly 100 compact discs. From September through July, the Seattle Symphony is heard live by more than 315,000 people annually in a schedule that includes 18 weeks of classical subscription Masterpiece concerts and a broad spectrum of other series, including Visiting Orchestras, Basically Baroque, Mainly Mozart, Popular Classics, Seattle Pops, Symphony Specials, Discover Music!, Tiny Tots, Popular Culture, Distinguished Artists, Guitar, and the Fluke/Gabelein Organ Recital series. The Orchestra also performs in community concerts throughout the Puget Sound region and the state of Washington.

After almost a century of searching for a permanent concert hall, the Seattle Symphony opened Benaroya Hall on September 12, 1998. Benaroya Hall was created specifically for symphonic concert music, and its stunning acoustics have received virtually unanimous praise from local, national and international media. The Hall was designed by LMN Architects of Seattle and world-renowned acoustical consultant Dr. Cyril M. Harris. A true public/private venture, more than half of the $118.1 million in construction costs were borne by the private sector.

The Seattle Symphony was established on December 29, 1903, when violinist/conductor Harry West assembled 24 musicians to perform in Christiansen Hall, which was located directly across the street from the current home of the Seattle Symphony. Music directors have included the noted American composer Henry Hadley (1909–11), John Spargur (1911–21), Basil Cameron (1932–38), Nikolai Sokoloff (1938–40), renowned British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (1941–44) and Manuel Rosenthal (1949–51).

Columbia Winery

COLUMBIA WINERY – PIONEERING WASHINGTON WINEMAKING SINCE 1962

Columbia Winery was founded in 1962 by ten friends, six of whom were University of Washington professors. Originally known as Associated Vintners, the group was united in the belief that classic European vinifera vines could survive the harsh Washington winters and that fine wine could be made in Washington State. They began by making wines in the garage of Dr. Lloyd Woodburne, Columbia Winery’s first winemaker, in the Seattle neighborhood of Laurelhurst.

David Lake, Master of Wine, joined Columbia Winery in 1979 as winemaker and has continued the pioneering spirit of Columbia Winery’s founders. David is most renowned for his experimentation with new varietals and for producing the first series of vineyard-designate wines in Washington State. He was the first winemaker to produce several varietals in Washington, including Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Gris. Today, David continues to experiment with new varietals and in new directions. He is committed to creating the highest quality wines possible.

Columbia Winery produces Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris as well as exceptional Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Columbia Winery offers vineyard-designate wines from long-established vineyards such as Otis, Wyckoff and the renowned Red Willow vineyard. The winery also produces numerous wines in very limited quantities that are sold exclusively at the winery and for the wine club.

Columbia Winery Photographs

The Enjoyment of Wine and Food by David Lake, Master of Wine

Wine should enhance the pleasure of good food just as food should enhance the enjoyment of wine. Growing up in Europe and later in the British Wine Trade, my sense was that great wines, especially French and Italian, need food to show at their best. Many modern international style wines are made for show, not for drinking. They are remarkably complete of themselves, prima donnas, leaving little room on the stage for good food. Usually, they are better consumed before or after the meal.

As Paul Pontallier, winemaker at Chateau Margaux, said to some of us at his table at a recent dinner featuring a lineup of highly awarded Australian Show Reserve Wines, "these are amazing wines, but I wish there was a wine amongst them that we could drink with dinner!"

Columbia Wines are made for drinking and not for show. With the notable exception of our Cellarmaster's Riesling and Gewürztraminer, which work as well on their own as with a meal, our wines are designed to be enjoyed with food.

The dry whites are genuinely dry without a trace of residual sugar, and are designed to finish cleanly and crisply to contrast with and complement the food. Our red wines possess adequate underlying acidity to freshen fruit flavors and balance alcohol and flavor intensity.

Wines without sufficient balancing acidity often appear heavy, tiring and boring with food. Our goal is to make wines that drink so pleasurably with food and friends, that it’s remarkably hard not to finish the bottle!

BRAVO! Club
c/o Katie Davis
Seattle Opera
1020 John Street
Seattle, WA 98109

"I think the quality of the [BRAVO!] membership is extraordinary. I had the good fortune to speak last summer on Lohengrin at an event at the Columbia Tower Club, prior to a performance attended by many club members. I have been speaking on opera to groups, large and small, since 1966. I have never had a better audience, and I don't say this lightly: awake, alive, eyes showing both interest and comprehension of what I was saying. Everyone involved with Seattle Opera—the board, the staff, the artists—all are delighted with BRAVO!, what you have done, what you have donated (which is deeply appreciated though it was not and never will be the primary purpose of BRAVO!), and your enthusiasm. There is not an officer of Seattle Opera who will not give up his or her time to encourage this remarkable organization, an organization, incidentally, that is not only the largest of its kind in the United States but which has had a knack for choosing first-rate presidents. Keep on with the good work!"

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The 4-Way Test

From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions:

"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

About Rotary

The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the
organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.

As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving the professional and social interests of club members. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its principal motto: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.

During and after World War II, Rotarians became increasingly involved in promoting international understanding. In 1945, 49 Rotary members served in 29 delegations to the United Nations Charter Conference. Rotary still actively participates in UN conferences by sending observers to major meetings and promoting the United Nations in Rotary publications. Rotary International's relationship with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dates back to a 1943 London Rotary conference that promoted international cultural and educational exchanges. Attended by ministers of education and observers from around the world, and chaired by a past president of RI, the conference was an impetus to the establishment of UNESCO in 1946.

An endowment fund, set up by Rotarians in 1917 "for doing good in the world," became a not-for-profit corporation known as The Rotary Foundation in 1928. Upon the death of Paul Harris in 1947, an outpouring of Rotarian donations made in his honor, totaling US$2 million, launched the Foundation's first program — graduate fellowships, now called Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Today, contributions to The Rotary Foundation total more than US$80 million annually and support a wide range of humanitarian grants and educational programs that enable Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

In 1985, Rotary made a historic commitment to immunize all of the world's children against polio. Working in partnership with nongovernmental organizations and national governments thorough its PolioPlus program, Rotary is the largest private-sector contributor to the global polio eradication campaign. Rotarians have mobilized hundreds of thousands of PolioPlus volunteers and have immunized more than one billion children worldwide. By the 2005 target date for certification of a polio-free world, Rotary will have contributed half a billion dollars to the cause.

As it approached the dawn of the 21st century, Rotary worked to meet the changing needs of society, expanding its service effort to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk. The organization admitted women for the first time (worldwide) in 1989 and claims more than 145,000 women in its ranks today.

Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed or re-established throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Today, 1.2 million Rotarians belong to some 31,000 Rotary clubs in 166 countries.

About Us

In the late 1960’s, Jerry Lohr began an extensive investigation of grape growing regions throughout California. As a result of his farming background, he has always understood and respected the importance of soil quality, climate and location, which led him to California’s Central Coast region. In 1972 and 1973, he planted 280 acres of wine grapes in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County, and in 1974 completed his winery in San Jose. In 1988 property near Paso Robles was purchased, now encompassing 2,000 acres of vineyards, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red varietals, and an adjacent winery and barrel facility was built. Also in 1988 Jerry began expansion of his vineyards in the Arroyo Seco, which now includes 900 acres of Chardonnay and other cool climate varietals such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Valdiguié.

By the late 1970’s, J. Lohr wines were distributed throughout the United States, and in the late 1980’s an international sales department was added. Today the J. Lohr products are available throughout the United States and in more than 25 countries worldwide.

The goal of J. Lohr brands is to produce varietals that can compete with the finest in the world, using a style that focuses on flavor and complexity through vineyard selection, technology and innovation. This goal has led Jerry Lohr and his team to develop three tiers of wines produced from estate vineyards – J. Lohr Cuvée Series, J. Lohr Vineyard Series and J. Lohr Estates. In addition J.Lohr Winery produces three tiers of wines to meet the needs of everyday and entry-level wine consumption - Crosspoint Vineyards, Cypress Vineyards and Painter Bridge.

J. Lohr Cuvée Series - very limited in production and produced only during vintages that provide extraordinary quality. Our Cuvée Series represents an artistic approach to winemaking using similar blending philosophies practiced by the Grand Cru Chateaux from Pauillac, St. Emilion and Pomerol. Our Cuvée PAU is a blend of at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance of the grapes made up of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec. Cuvée St. E is produced from over 50% Cabernet Franc the remainder comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. Lastly the Cuvée POM is a blend of over 50% Merlot with the balance derived from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. Each of these wines competes with the most expensive wines produced in Bordeaux and California. We have positioned the Cuvée Series as our "artistic expression of flavor".

J. Lohr Vineyard Series - limited in production and utmost in quality, our Vineyard Series is J. Lohr Winery’s entrée into the luxury wine category. Our Arroyo Vista Vineyard is nestled in the Arroyo Seco A.V.A. of Monterey County, and produces our most intensely scented, complex Chardonnay. Our Hilltop Cabernet is located on the highest, best-drained slope in our Paso Robles holdings. The east-facing vineyard produces the most potent, darkly colored fruit, and wine of both power and great style.
Our Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is grown just north of the town of St. Helena in the heart of the Napa Valley – home of the finest Sauvignon Blancs in the country.

J. Lohr Estates - a line of estate-produced varietals of extraordinary quality, from J. Lohr’s home vineyards in Monterey County and Paso Robles. We control all aspects from viticulture to winemaking to bottling to ensure “flavor second to none.” J. Lohr Estates includes the Riverstone Chardonnay, Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, South Ridge Syrah, Bay Mist White Riesling, Wildflower Valdiguié, Los Osos Merlot and Old Vines Zinfandel.

Crosspoint Vineyards - this wine offers a new and deliciously vibrant style of winemaking. With extraordinarily bright "just picked" aromas and flavors, it is lively and refreshing to the taste. We produce Crosspoint Pinot Noir from our Monterey vineyard..

Cypress Vineyards - this brand reflects our commitment to make exceptional quality wines for life’s everyday celebrations. By blending wines from our estate vineyards and other carefully selected California vineyards we handcraft the Cypress Vineyards varietals. Currently available in this line are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and White Zinfandel.

Painter Bridge - these entry-level wines are remarkably flavorful alternatives to the mass-produced varietals bearing a California appellation. Internationally acclaimed and often judged "best of class", the Painter Bridge Chardonnay and Zinfandel are consistent with J. Lohr Winery's commitment to exceed quality standards with every brand that we produce.

ARIEL Non-Alcoholic Wines
The Only De-alcoholized Wine to Win a Gold Medal Against Wines with Alcohol.

ARIEL Vineyards is a pioneer in the production of super and ultra premium non-alcoholic wines. The wine world took notice when our ARIEL Blanc won a Gold Medal against wines with alcohol. Since that historic event, ARIEL wines have been judged in eight professional wine competitions to be superior to wines with alcohol.

Rain City Fencing Center was founded by Barbara Todd Heiner, Steve Colton and Greg Jones. We opened our doors in May 2000 with Maestro Garik Balayan on board and only a handful of students. Since then we have taught hundreds and hundreds of children to fence through our classes, summer camps and school programs. Our competitive program has also grown, with many Rain City fencers competing on the local, national, and -- occasionally -- international levels.

In our new facility, we will be able to offer more opportunities for kids and adults to learn to fence. By sharing our expertise as well as our love for this sport, we hope to help each fencer reach their goals. While we will continue to focus our efforts on training junior and youth fencers to succeed at the national level, we want to see fencers of all ages and ability levels reach their potential.
